Description
After serving in the Royal Australian Air Force, Whitlam joined the Australian Labor Party in 1945. He became the Member for Werriwa in Sydney’s south in 1952, retaining the seat in 11 more federal elections over the next 25 years. Whitlam led the reform of the Labor Party platform during the long years in Opposition.
Gough passed away in 2014 aged 98.
Of interest to Canberra residents, he was a graduate of Canberra Grammar School.
This is an A4 copy of the letter that Gough Whitlam receive from John Kerr regarding his dismissal from parliament has been personally signed by Gough Whitlam. We don’t know of anything else like this in existence and it was certainly signed in good humour by Gough in his latter years.
Some of the charities who conducted fund raising auctions wouldn’t have the time or funds to frame items they received. You can frame it yourself. A nice inexpensive gift for someone who has an interest in Australian politics. This would have been signed by Gough some time in the early 2000s.
This item was purchased at a charity auction held in Canberra. Over the years, we supported many charities by attending fund raisers and purchasing memorabilia. Go to the About page for more information.
