Sir John Kerr – Governor General 1977
Sir John Robert Kerr, AK, GCMG, GCVO, QC (24 September 1914 – 24 March 1991) was an Australian barrister and judge who served as the 18th governor-general of Australia, in office from 1974 to 1977. He is primarily known for his involvement in the 1975 constitutional crisis, which culminated in his decision to dismiss the incumbent prime minister Gough Whitlam and appoint Malcolm Fraser as his replacement, which led to unprecedented actions in Australian federal politics.
Sir John Kerr passed away in 1991 aged 76.

Sir Zelman Cowen – Governor General 1977 – 1982
Sir Zelman Cowen, AK, GCMG, GCVO, PC, QC, FTSE (7 October 1919 – 8 December 2011) was an Australian legal scholar and university administrator who served as the 19th Governor-General of Australia, in office from 1977 to 1982.
Sir Zelman Cowen passed away in 2011 aged 92.

Sir Ninian Stephen – Governor General 1982 – 1989
Sir Ninian Martin Stephen, KG, AK, GCMG, GCVO, KBE, PC, QC (15 June 1923 – 29 October 2017) was an English-born Australian judge who served as the 20th governor-general of Australia, in office from 1982 to 1989. He was previously a justice of the High Court of Australia from 1972 to 1982.
Sir Ninian Stephen passed away in 2017 aged 94.

Hon Bill Hayden – Governor General 1989 – 1996
William George Hayden AC (23 January 1933 – 21 October 2023) was an Australian politician who served as the 21st governor-general of Australia from 1989 to 1996. He was Leader of the Labor Party and Leader of the Opposition from 1977 to 1983, and served as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1983 to 1988 under Bob Hawke and as Treasurer of Australia in 1975 under Gough Whitlam.
Hon Bill Hayden passed away in 2023 aged 90.

Sir William Patrick Deane, AC, KBE, KC (born 4 January 1931) is an Australian barrister and jurist who served as the 22nd governor-general of Australia, in office from 1996 to 2001. He was previously a Justice of the High Court of Australia from 1982 to 1995.

Dr Peter Hollingworth – Governor General – 2001 – 2003
Peter John Hollingworth, AC, OBE (born 10 April 1935) is an Australian retired Anglican bishop. Engaged in social work for several decades, he served as the archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane in Queensland for 11 years from 1989 and was the 1991 Australian of the Year. He served as the 23rd governor-general of Australia from 2001 until 2003. He is also an author and recipient of various civil and ecclesiastical honours. In May 2003 Hollingworth became the third Australian governor-general to resign, after criticisms were aired over his conduct as Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane in the 1990s.

Each Governor General has personally signed a first day envelope featuring Queen Elizabeth II during their term. This is a one of a kind, rare item. The frame is approx 40 x 90cm.

This item was purchased at a charity auction held in Canberra. Over the years, we supported many charities by attending fund raisers and purchasing memorabilia. Go to the About page for more information.
